A while back you may have heard about an incident involving the Blackhawk's Patrick Kane involving a cab driver in Buffalo, NY. It seems that after a night out drinking Kane and his cousin were paying for a cab fare but the cabbie did not have 20 cents to give them exact change and that was when the pair assaulted him. At least that's the story the cabbie gave the press.
Patrick Kane pleaded not guilty to the assault charges, because he claimed that the cabbie locked him and his cousin in the car while counting the money. But is that a valid reason to assault a person? The cabbie was just following the standard procedure in college towns where kids are likely to run out on the bill. Kane should have just been patient and waited a little. I understand he might have felt uncomfortable, but he wasn't in danger.
What's clear however is that his punishment was not nearly enough. According to ESPN, Kane pleaded not guilty and was not charged with assault. He got no conviction whatsoever and only has to send an apology to the cab driver that he assaulted. But is that fitting? Kane committed assault and battery, not to mention theft of services, because he felt he was a hotshot that could get away it. His lawyer claimed that he strives to be a role model, but I don’t think that a good role model assaults innocents. He’s off the hook for now but he very well might snap back into someone on the ice just like this. It’s shocking that someone with this bad a character was named 2008’s rookie of the year.
