Albert Pujols, considered one of the greatest baseball players to ever play the game, was born January 16, 1980 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. One of the most consistent players in the MLB, he has placed himself among the elites of all time and is on pace to break records that have exemplified baseball for centuries. Pujols has overcome obstacles on his path to stardom such as position changes, being drafted in the 13th round after being overlooked by teams and leaving his home behind to play high school baseball in the United States. Pujols stats are extraordinary as he has never hit below .314, had less than 103 RBI’s in a season, hit less than 32 homeruns in a year or slug below .561. He is currently 73rd on the MLB’s all-time homerun list and holds the records for most homeruns by a player by their ninth season. Pujols has made 8 All-Star games, has won 2 MVP’s and has finished second twice behind Barry Bonds, infamous for alleged steroid use, but more importantly, in 2008, he won the Roberto Clemente award for outstanding in the community. Pujols has three children, one with Down Syndrome, and is active in helping find a cure for the gene mutilation. Pujols’ foundation, the Pujols Family Foundation, helps people with Down Syndrome and helps the poor in the DR by providing medical care, food and supplies. Pujols’ accomplishments are endless and his dedication will only lead to greater success both on and off the field as he continues to dominate pitchers and revolutionize baseball.
