With Mark Buehrle’s perfect game in jeopardy, Ozzie Guillen, manager of the Chicago White Sox, made the most perfect of moves at the most perfect of times. Replacing defensively challenged starting left fielder Carlos Quentin, Guillen sent in speedy outfielder DeWayne Wise to cover more ground for the ChiSox. The move was momentous. Three outs away from perfection, Buehrle delivered an inside pitch that Rays’ right fielder Gabe Kapler turned on, launching it into the left center field gap towards the stands. Wise galloped towards the fences, timed his jump and made a mesmerizing catch, bringing back a homerun that was sure to have ended Buerhle’s shutout. Buehrle went on to complete perfection, etching his name in the history books becoming only the 18th player in MLB history to record a perfect game.
