I've had some trouble with movies in the past; I just couldn't seem to find the good ones. When you see their trailers on tv they can seem like original, surefire hits but turn out to be flops. Then films that barely get publicity and nobody knows about turn out to be oscar winners. When asking friends, one has to keep in mind that they have their own tastes and they can differ in how a good a movie really is. I've also tried looking towards movie critics for guidance but they are also human and are influenced by their own tastes in films, not just whether it was a good motion picture or not. And there are so many of them it is quite hard to know which one to listen to. This is where the site, Rotten Tomatoes, plays its part.
A strange name for a site you say? Well if you look back to the time when the masses looked towards theatrical performances for entertainment, then you can see that they would throw food, sometimes tomatoes at the stage if it was an unsatisfactory play. Well, Rotten Tomatoes does pretty much the same thing by getting dozens of critics to write on a page dedicated to one movie. Then depending on whether their rating is rotten (negative) or fresh (positive), it is used in a "tomatometer", which measures how many rotten reviews of the film there are out of the whole. Trailers and interviews with the cast and directors can be found on the page, and there is even a little description under the "tomatometer" which gives a general consensus of the movie. This site is great for those of you who look at other people's words to guide you towards what movie to watch. In this way, there is a general consensus on whether it is a good film or not.
This site also has some other features as well, such as giving information on upcoming movies, DVDs being released, and even news about celebrities. It is a really great site for the frequent movie go-er, so if you haven't checked it out yet, go to rottentomatoes.com and testit out.
