Mexican Textbooks Deleted Colonial History

Millions of Mexican students returned to school with a new set of textbooks that omitted
the Spanish conquest of 1521. The conquest was one of the most important eras
in Mexican history as it incited the Spanish colonization and the Mexican
independence movement of 1821. Many critics have belittled President Felipe Calderon
for having allowed a significant event to be erased. The critic have argued
that the omission has been intentional as the arrival of the conquistadors resulted
in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of indigenous people. Even though the conquest
has been marked with extreme brutality, the students should be informed of how
such brutality has been essential part of their history.
