Jose Hernandez was born to a family of Mexican migrant farmers in California. He endured hard labor and saw education as the path to attain a better life. Hernandez decided to put himself through college and now, he is "one of seven astronauts who will be onboard the space shuttle Discovery to the International Space Station this week" (Sunseri, 2009). Hernandez studied electrical engineering and became an engineer at the Johnson Space Center. He hopes that his rag to riches tale can be an inspiration for Latino students who hail from humble origins.
