Los Victorinos is a Spanish-language telenovela is about four men, each with the name Victorino. The four men were born on the same month, on the same day, and on the same hour. Victorino Gallardo is born into a rich family where his father is the head of an illegal enterprise. This Victorino is a wannabe bad boy who is disrespectful to his grandmother (whom he pushed off the staircase) and mother and is extremely spoiled. Victorino Majarrez is born into a middle-class family in which his father is a military-fanatic. The father presdestined his son to be a general and has been saving up money for military school by restricting the clothes that his family can buy and the foods that they can purchase. He sleeps in military pajamas and drives around in an army jeep. This Victorino lives under the pressure to comply to his zealous father's desires. Victorino Mora was born into an extremely poor family as he lives in a run-down shack (which is hardly displayed in telenovelas). His mother is incarcerated and his father was brutally murdered and he supports his younger siblings by working as a hitman. The final Victorino, Victorino Perez, was adopted by a homosexual middle-class couple. The couple was unable to adopt as same-sex couples hardly have any rights in Latin America. The couple hired a woman to pose as the mother but she fell in love with the child and refused to leave his company. Adding to the calamity is her relationship with Victorino's adopted "homosexual" father. On the day of the Victorinos' births, a fortuneteller prophecized that on the day that three of the Victorinos meet, one of them will die. The Victorinos live in the same city and whenever they get close to one another, a storm kicks in and mass hysteria ensues. The Victorinos either are trying to avoid one another or kill another off to avoid being killed due to the prophecy.
I just wrote a very long sypnosis but this only captures a jist of the show. Los Victorinos features a lot that most telenovelas have never offered. First, it takes glimpse on how difficult it is to live in destitude in Latin America. Second, the characters are not superficial or hypersexualized. Instead, they have authentic characteristics and emotions which is good vacation from the horny and adulterous protagonists of most telenovelas. Third, the action scenes actually look realistic while the production values and cinematography do not look cheap at all. Hopefully you are persuaded to watch this excellent show (which you can catch on Telemundo at 10:00 PM Mondays through Fridays). Here is a clip. Enjoy!
