In India, most people spend a great deal of time watching soap operas whether it be during the day, night, or morning. They are constantly watching soap operas while simultaneously doing work. For the most part, these soap operas go on FOREVER. As far as my knowledge is concerned, there is one soap opera "Kasauti Zindagi Ki" (a literal translation is life's struggle) has been going on for the past 8 or 9 years. I mean really 8- years! They soap opera's main characters have gone from young and in love to being divorced having children and even having grandchildren. One would think that people would grow tired of this, but not a chance.
Soap operas can also get very messy. The basic conflict is usually a misunderstanding when it comes to trust or money. Characters frame one another for committing crimes to discredit them. Sometimes they even plant evidence in drawers that is usually found by other people who were just snooping around. Again, this happens in EVERY soap opera. So, why do people still watch them? Frankly, I honestly don't know. Maybe it's just fun to watch other people's lives get messed up. Who knows?
Another thing about these soap operas is that they are so predictable. Every time they lose someone on the set, they stage a car accident in the plot and the character has to get plastic surgery. Then, it takes a long time for that new person to even be recognized by the other characters. Like I said, it's just a series of sticky situations. Moreover, since bollywood and desi things in general are very musical, each villian has his or her own background music that immediately lets you know of their arrival.
So, bottom line. Why can't they find something else to spice up the plot? and Why do people still watch these overly spiced soaps? The world may never know!
