Background Check: Who’s Your Choice for "Best New Artist" in the upcoming VMA's?

Are you guys ready for the MTV VMA's coming up this Sunday on the 13th? Have you all cast your all important votes for each of the categories? Well I have. But not before doing a small background check on all those artists or songs I didn't know much about. So, in honor of the upcoming awards I decided to enlighten all of you on the candidates for "Best New Artist"! If you are like me, you have probably heard these hit singles, maybe heard of the artist that sings them, and know absolutely nothing more than the bare basics of the artist or group. So, I am taking the time to properly introduce you all to the five nominees for 2009's "Best New Artist" for the VMA's.

First up is 3OH!3's (pronounced three-oh-three) "Don't Trust Me". 3OH!3 started out in 2004 and released their debut album 2007. With the release of their first music video to this hot techno jam, 3OH!3 is becoming increasingly popular all over the U.S. They toured all over the United States on the well known Vans Warped Tour, and also made appearances at well known annual music fairs. Their sound is like rap, mixed with electronica with rock and pop...it has this alternative sound that you are probably not used to. But it’s really cool, with lyrics for "Don't Trust Me" like "Shush girl, shut your lips. Do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips", they grab an audience who is dying from a taste of the out of ordinary, a taste of some biting lyrics and music to get away from the usual songs you may listen to. And they are really funny to watch and listen to when they perform. Hahah I don't know what it is, but when I listen to them I get a huge grin on my face, and they are just really enjoyable. And their name is pretty amazing too.

Next in the line up is rapper Asher Roth and his music video for "I Love College" which tells the story of a crazy frat party he went to. I actually had never heard of this song, but when I watched the video, heard the soft beat and Roth's smooth raps, I basically fell in love. It's such a different sound than you hear now-a-days. The actual lyrics are probably not the friendliest ones, but they could be worse. It’s just a fun song to listen to, with a nice mellow beat. Asher Roth himself grew up in suburbia in Pennsylvania. He first got into rap about ten years ago, and soon began uploading his own freestyles on his MySpace. He was discovered from there, and I guess the rest is history. His debut album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle was released in May of 2009, and was able to make #5 in the Billboard 200s.

We then have Aubrey Drake Graham or simply Drake to most people,. He’s an actor, singer and rapper (he played Jimmy on Degrassi, so you may have heard him rap a few times if you are an avid Degrassi watcher). He is nominated here for his song "Best I Ever Had". Personally I stray away from songs that are blatantly about sex, but this song is just so catchy, it gets stuck in your head against your will. I found myself murmuring "the BEST I ever had...best I ever had" to myself in random situations. And the video is pretty funny to; it put a small smile on my face. Drake got started acting, and debuted his talent through Degrassi as mentioned above. To really get noticed he released a series of popular mix tapes of his work, as well many singles to his songs over the past couple years. He was signed this year, and is expected to release his debut album in 2010.

Next is Kid Cudi (his actual name is Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi) for his song and video for "Day N' Nite". I had absolutely no idea who this guy was, but I definatly knew his song. It’s just really memorable. I mean at least the chorus is, I just mumble along for the rest of the song. But the newest music video for this song, the one that is nominated with, is really amazing as it creatures Kid Cudi walking around town taking double takes on his surroundings to find them turn into cartoons/artwork. It's fun to see the changes that are made and the interpretations taken regarding night life in the city. Kid Cudi got noticed much like Drake, when he released a couple mix tapes of his work, which reflects a sort of alternative hip hop. His single "Day N' Nite" off upcoming record Man on the Moon: The End of Day made the Billboard Hot 100. He is also a songwriter, helping with the writing for kit singles like Kanye West's "Heartless". Kid Cudi actually joined Asher Roth for the Great Hangover concert tour for the summer of 2009.

"Pa pa pa poker face, pa pa poker face" Haha I'm sure you all have heard this catchy tune on the airwaves, or at least know that part of this song. Actually I only know that part of the song, but it’s basically the most memorable part in my opinion. The last nominee for the VMA's "Best New Artist" is Lady Gaga and her HIT single "Poker Face". Lady Gaga, aka Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, got her start as a songwriter for established artists like Akon. It was actually Akon who convinced the chairman of her label to sign her, after hearing her sing. She immediately began to work on and release her debut album in 2008, The Fame. To date, she has a number of international singles off of this album. She also has had her own headlining tour, after touring with acts like New Kids on the Block and the Pussycat Dolls.
